Don't Get Trapped!
"Six times as
many people died trapped above the fire as those
trapped
below" Dr. John R. Hall Jr.

Consider These Fire
Facts:
Investigation of Fatal Residential Fires:
•
According to the Canadian Council of Fire Marshalls &
Fire Commissioners (CCFMFC), there was a total of 53,589
fires during 2002 in Canada resulting in over 2,800
deaths and injuries and approx. $1.5 billion in property
losses.
•
56% of
fatal residential fires occurred between Midnight to 6
a.m. (Ontario Fire Marshall's Office)
•
Over 45% of young victims were reported to be asleep at
the time of the fire, and 20% were too young to act
(Ontario Fire Marshall's 0ffice)
•
Between 2002-2006, smoke alarms were either inoperative
or missing in 63% of fatal residential fires and 100% of
inoperative alarms were battery-related issues
(dead or missing batteries).
(Ont. Fire Marshall's Office)
•
A
home fire starts every 80 seconds and doubles in size
every 30 seconds (USFA)
•
A
person has
approximately 30 seconds to decide their escape during a
fire (USFA)
•
29% of
victims were trying to ESCAPE at the time of their fatal
injury.
•
56% of
victims were found in a bedroom at the time of their
fatal injury.
•
Exit
problems contributed to the fatality in 36% of the
fatalities where a factor contributing to injury was
noted
If you
are not prepared today, you’re not alone…
There are several
residential fire safety misconceptions that may
contribute to these devastatingly high numbers. To
better understand these misconceptions, we conducted an
online survey of nearly 500 homeowners.
The
findings showed that:
Nearly 20% of the
500 homeowners surveyed
believe they have between
four and five minutes to escape from their home once
a smoke alarm sounds. NFPA reports that the amount
of time is actually three minutes or less.
78% own at least
one general purpose fire extinguisher. BUT, only
12%
who live in two-story or three-story houses reported
having a portable escape ladder or other reliable
means of escape.
Even more
troubling, of the 12% who had portable escape
ladders, few could actually remember where they
stored them!
This startling
statistic illustrates that the
vast majority of respondents had absolutely no reliable
way out of their second or third story windows.
Will it be too late for rescue?
The use of proper working smoke
detectors on each level of your home is a mandatory
requirement across Canada. However, when
homeowners fail to regularly maintain and test smoke
detectors, the potential risk of a tragedy taking place
is greatly increased.
The unfortunate truth is, that a fire can reach
untenable conditions in
less than 3 minutes which means
that occupants are at risk of succumbing to the fire if they are not able to get out within these
crucial first 3 minutes. Further complicating this
reality is the fact that 50% of home fires occur
during the night when family members are asleep in their
second/third floor bedrooms. When a smoke alarm
sounds, family members waken out of their sleep may have
difficulty in finding their way out through a dark,
smoke-filled house
before they are able to reach a lower level exit to
escape from the fire and smoke.

The question is...are smoke
alarms enough?
Is there a way to provide
additional protection to give your family a greater
chance of escaping from a fire?
