Every detection device in a security system has a specific job to perform. However, standard security installations often just involve placing door contacts and perhaps one motion detector, without fully explaining to homeowners how these devices work or why they are used. While understanding these basic components is simple—door contacts sound an alarm when a door opens, and motion detectors trigger when someone walks in front of them—what many people fail to consider is the “onion effect”: layered security and strategic placement.
Relying on basic contacts and a single motion detector leaves significant gaps in your defense. While contacts on doors and windows do sound an alarm if the entry point is physically opened, they cannot detect alternative intrusion methods. Consider a scenario involving a glass patio door: if a thief smashes the glass and crawls through without ever opening the door itself, the contact sensor is never triggered. When this is pointed out, people usually say, “Well, the motion detector will catch them”. What is crucial to understand, however, is that if the motion detects the thief, it means they are already inside your home or business.
This is where the layered system that Palladium Security designs comes into play. We ensure entry points like doors are covered, but we also install glass break detectors inside to cover the specific sound of shattering glass. This strategic layering provides protection before entry occurs. If a thief breaks the glass but does not open the door, the glass break detector will sound the alarm prior to them gaining access, which may cause them to flee at that moment. Should they continue to enter, the motion detector will trigger next.
Furthermore, this layered approach provides better information to the central monitoring station. When both a glass break detector and a motion detector trigger sequentially, the station receives confirmation that two distinct devices have detected an intrusion. This context is vital. In contrasts, if a system only uses a door contact and a motion detector, and a thief enters through smashed glass, only the motion detector will trigger. If the station receives only a single signal from one device, they may think it is a false alarm. Palladium’s design ensures intrusions are accurately detected and prioritized.
